Radio and television presenter Chris Tarrant will be in Birmingham in August to be the next celebrity honoured on the city’s Walk of Stars.

Chris will receive his star from on Thursday 5th August, at The Lord’s Taverner Eve of Edgbaston dinner at Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

Speaking earlier about the presentation Chris said “I’m absolutely thrilled to be following in the footsteps of several great mates of mine from the Midlands, all of whom I have great respect for. Although I’m actually a Southerner, born and bred in Berkshire, I think I’ve become an honorary Brummie! I love the city and I’ve had a million laughs in Brum over many years. I was in University in Birmingham and then I’ll never forget that, for me, Birmingham was where it all started - firstly on ATV Today as a young, long-haired reporter and then of course on TISWAS. They are proud memories and I’ll always be in debt to the city and the people who gave me my first real break. I’m really looking forward to it; it should be a great night”.

Hailing from Reading, Chris was educated at The Kings School in Worcester and then studied English at the University of Birmingham. He later went on to work at ATV as a newsreader on ATV Today.

From there he rose to fame presenting Tiswas, filmed just off Broad Street in the studios on Gas Street.

Mike Olley, Broad Street Manager, added “We are delighted to welcome Chris Tarrant and honour him on the Broad Street Walk of Star’s. He’s a fantastically talented presenter who deserves a place amongst the other Midland greats that run along our Golden Mile”.

The latest celebrity to publicly state that they want to be honoured with a Broad Street Walk of Star is television personality Adrian Chiles.

Previous admissions from Frank Skinner, Jamelia and Roy Wood show that the stars are now hot property with Birmingham celebs.

Following his attendance at Saturdays Walk of Star event for pal Frank Skinner rumour has been rife that the host of BBC’s ‘The One Show’ and ‘Match of the Day 2’ was also keen to be honoured with a slab on the city’s Golden Mile.

Speaking live on ‘The One Show’ (BBC1) following Frank Skinner’s star presentation, guest Frank revealed that Adrian had said “I can’t believe you got a star before me”. On screening a photo of Frank taken during the presentation Adrian commented “I’ll look even smugger if I ever get one”. He went on to finish the piece on the live show by offering his apologies to the Lord Mayor of Birmingham for haranguing him to give Adrian a star in the near future during the event!

Those that appear on the Broad Street Walk of Stars are voted for by the public. The website www.walkofstars.co.uk hosts the voting for the stars, so if you want to see Adrian included log on and get voting!

Birmingham television personality Gary Newbon will be on Broad Street next month to be honoured by the city’s Walk of Stars.

Gary, who has previously won three awards from the Royal Television Society, will be welcomed by an audience of special guests at the Lord’s Taverners Luncheon on Thursday 10th December at the ICC where he will receive his star from Councillor Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council.

The inscribed award will be later embedded in Broad Street’s Walk of Stars alongside those received by other Midland celebrities.

Gary said today: “This is the biggest honour I have received since I arrived in Birmingham 38 years ago.

“I have always strived to promote the City both on the television screens at a national and local level and on a personal front. I would not want to list what I have done on and off screen – that is for others to do – but while I have done my best for Birmingham it may not be quite as much as the City has done for me over the years. It changed my life and I will always be grateful.

“Although I now work for Sky Sports I still live in the area and continue to promote this great City. London is a fine capital, but it could do more to recognise what Birmingham has to offer. It is still a disgrace that the National Stadium is not at the NEC. As the presenter of the first bid I shuddered at the reasons for not picking it. I won and lost some TV battles in my role as Controller of Sport for Central, but I fought all the way.

“At least now in the future they can come and visit us and say they have walked all over me for the first time on Broad Street. Thank you Birmingham. It is a fantastic honour for my family and myself”.

Gary Newbon joined ATV (later Central Television) in Birmingham in 1971 as the sports presenter. He continued to present until he left in August 2004 to join Sky Sports. He also made his mark in radio as a regular host on Talksport for nine years.

He later became Controller of Sport for Central Television and developed a whole range of local sports programmes and talent both in front of the camera and behind the scenes – many of these people are now involved in network shows.
